When you think about the best lens for a portrait you probably don’t think about the Micro 105mm. The 85mm and 70-200mm lenses are two of the most popular focal lengths for beautiful portraits with nice, blurry bokeh.
What you may not know is that the Nikon Micro 105mm f2.8 VR is a wonderful lens for portraits and people. It’s best known for doing micro (Nikon uses the word micro rather than macro but the two words are interchangeable) shots with 1:1 magnification. The lens is sharp and allows you to get close to your subject for wonderful detail. At full 1:1 magnification the depth of field is very shallow. Shooting in macro mode requires practice, patience and a subject that doesn’t move! The lens does have VR but it isn’t useful in the micro mode.
Here are some macro shots taken with the micro 105mm lens. Each image was shot at or near 1:1 magnification.
Although it does a nice job on micro shots this 105mm lens can be used for so much more! It’s an awesome lens for portraits and produces a gorgeous bokeh. Some say that a micro lens is too sharp for portraits. However, that doesn’t seem to be a problem with the Nikon 105mm f2.8. Nikon Ambassador, Tamara Lackey, says that her go-to lens for a single person portrait when shooting in the field is the Nikon 105mm 2.8.
I had the opportunity to play around with the 105mm this past weekend. Three of my grandchildren were in town which provided a great opportunity to put the lens to the test. I was extremely pleased with the results. The 105mm didn’t disappoint!
The 105mm focus speed kept up with active children. The VR was awesome and was useful in low light indoor as well as overcast outdoor conditions.
More than likely you don’t have the 105mm in your camera bag. But if you do, don’t relegate to only macro work. Pull it out and use it on people! It’s fun to use and produces beautiful results.
And if you don’t have the 105mm but would like to try one out, you’re in luck. We have one in our Rental Program. You can rent it for three days for $64 and then go out and have a ton of fun! It’s like having two lenses in one. Enjoy!
